Overcrowding continues at elementary schools

NW sixth gradersContinued enrollment growth and a lack of classroom space at overcrowded elementary schools have led to the decision to temporarily move more sixth grade students to junior high buildings beginning fall of 2017.

At their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, February 27, 2017, the Puyallup School Board agreed to temporarily move sixth grade students from some of the most heavily impacted elementary schools to junior high schools with available space.

Families and staff at Fruitland, Mountain View, Northwood, and Sunrise elementaries have all learned that changes will take place beginning this fall.

Informational meetings were hosted at each of the impacted schools in January and February. Parents were able to hear from building principals and district administrators, ask questions, and learn of the planning taking place to make the transition smooth.

Each year, directors of the board request a review of enrollment numbers and projections. They also request recommendations and strategies for responding to the student growth crisis.

Directors previously approved the move of Zeiger sixth grade students to Ballou Junior High beginning in the 2015-16 school year. They also approved the move of Brouillet sixth grade students to Stahl Junior High beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

When making these moves it was very important to directors that students would move from their feeder school to the junior high within their attendance area. That has been the case.

Making the decision to move sixth grade students is one of the most challenging parts of the job, says Director Chris Ihrig. "We are very cognizant of the fact that if there was going to be a move, it would be a move to the junior high schools that [students] would be moving on to the next year anyway, to build that community."

At the board meeting on February 27 the following action was taken:

The temporary move of sixth grade students from Fruitland Elementary to the Aylen Junior High campus beginning in the fall of 2017.

The temporary move of sixth grade students from Mountain View and Northwood elementaries to the Edgemont Junior High campus beginning in the fall of 2017.

The temporary move of sixth grade students from Sunrise Elementary to the Ferrucci Junior High campus beginning in the fall of 2017.
