The Rogers High School Drama team, Rogers High School gymnastics team, as well as Puyallup High School girls wrestling team have been identified as the 2017 Washington Interscholastic Athletics and Activities (WIAA) Winter Academic State Championships.

Rick Wells, director of athletics, health, and fitness, will present the individual and team highlights of these three teams in his summary of Winter sports to the Puyallup School District Board of Directors at the March 20 school board meeting at Edgemont Junior High School.

The Rogers High School Drama team brought in a combined grade point average of 3.579. The Rogers High School gymnastics team earned a combined grade point average of 3.771. And the Puyallup High School girls wrestling team achieved a combined team grade point average of 3.773.

The WIAA recognizes teams as academic champions for earning the highest combined team grade point average in each sport for the season.

The WIAA also recognizes teams who earn distinguished or outstanding academic performance. Teams with a combined grade point average of 3.0 to 3.49 earn a distinguished academic award, and a combined team grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0 receives an outstanding academic award.

This past winter 22 Puyallup School District high school teams received academic distinctions from the WIAA in either outstanding or distinguished category.

The Emerald Ridge High School gymnastics team are the South Puget Sound League (SPSL) 4A champions this winter with eight wins and zero losses. The Emerald Ridge boys basketball team took third place in the SPSL 4A with 12 wins and five losses.

The Puyallup High School boys swim and dive team took second place in the SPSL 4A with eight wins and one loss. The Puyallup High School gymnastics team also took second place for SPSL 4A with six wins and four losses. Puyallup High School girls wrestling brought home a third place title for SPSL 4A with an overall record of four wins and three losses. And the Puyallup High School bowling team earned a third place title for SPSL 4A with six wins and two losses.

The Rogers High School girls wrestling team are also SPSL 4A league champions with seven wins and one loss. The Rogers High School girls basketball team achieved third place in SPLSL 4A with four wins and two losses.

Brooklyn Bartelson from Puyallup High School girls wrestling team is the WIAA Girls State Wrestling Champion in the 120- pound weight class. Josh Franich, from Puyallup High School boys wrestling team, is WIAA Boys State Wrestling Champion in the 120- pound weight class.

The Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association (WSWCA) awarded Rogers High School coach, Tom Tripple, with the honor of WSWCA Coach of the Year.

Rick Wells said in celebration, “The recent achievement of being selected a 2017 WIAA State Champion in either academics or athletics truly serves as a tribute to a champion’s devotion and hard work. This recognition is a solid testimonial of commitment, determination, and dedication to staff, students and parents in the PSD, the South Puget Sound League, and the State of Washington. I personally want to say WELL DONE on such a distinguished recognition and on reaching such a pinnacle point.”
