Puyallup High Senior Paris Broadnax is motivated, energetic, friendly, and involved in her school. She is also a very busy student who belongs to clubs, volunteers, has a weekend job at Starbucks, and is working hard towards graduation in June.

Broadnax is one of more than 1,650 seniors throughout the district who are making plans for the future, yet whose lives are busy with school work and activities as they prepare for graduation.

She describes her senior year as manageable but requiring a lot of dedication. “I feel like time is going by way faster. There are college and scholarship applications to complete. The deadlines come quicker than you think,” she said

While planning for her future, Broadnax continues to take rigorous classes at Puyallup High. She has taken Advanced Placement (AP) classes in Psychology, English, Spanish, and Statistics. She is currently taking AP Government and AP Literature.

Her resume at Puyallup includes Debate, Robotics, Key Club, Viking Ladies, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and Dance Team. She especially enjoys the debate team and has participated for the past three years. “I like having hard facts, and I think proof is a great tool. I like how when I’m writing my case I don’t have to be unsure—I have my case and my numbers. It’s reassuring,” said Broadnax.

The Key Club provides Broadnax opportunities to participate in community service events. She enjoys working with community members and serving others, for example at community dinners.

As an AVID student in the Puyallup School District she has developed the skills she needs to be successful. At the secondary level AVID is an elective class that helps students learn organizational skills, how to take notes effectively, time management, and student success strategies. Each week students enrolled in the program receive two days of AVID curriculum instruction, two days of tutor-led study groups, and one day of motivational activities, guest speakers, and field trips to colleges.  

She has her sights set on attending college at the University of Washington Seattle, Gonzaga University, or Seattle Pacific University to study pre-law and criminal justice. A highlight from last summer was a college road trip with friends to visit Whitworth University, Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Washington State University, and Central Washington University. “I loved the trip and they were beautiful campuses,” she said.

Broadnax attended Fruitland Elementary beginning in fourth grade, Aylen Junior High, and Puyallup High. She said she has enjoyed attending Puyallup schools and especially the relationships she has with teachers. “I like the environment, and the teachers are cool. They are easy to have conversations with, and most of the teachers here know my name,” said Broadnax.

The environment at Puyallup High provides a school where she feels safe, doesn’t ever feel out of place, and the teachers care about students. “I think the teachers try as hard as they can to make different programs and opportunities available for students. They realize that students have different needs and abilities and are here to help students be successful in whatever they do. Puyallup does a great job of hiring teachers—I love the teachers here,” said Broadnax.

She said one of her favorite teachers who stands out is her advisor Sandra Coyer. Coyer has high praise for Broadnax, “I am very proud of the young woman I’ve seen Paris grow into the past three years. She has always been hard working and dedicated, but the amount of care she puts into her work (whether it’s her portfolio or her course work) has continued to be an area that impresses me. I am confident in her ability to overcome adversity and challenges just based on what I’ve seen. She is an outstanding young woman,” said Coyer.
