Six district schools win Washington Achievement Awards

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has identified six Puyallup schools to receive a Washington Achievement Award for 2017. These awards are based on statewide assessment data and honor schools for their successful efforts to improve student learning.
 
The annual awards program celebrates Washington’s top-performing schools. This year a total of 280 schools statewide received the award.
 
Schools are recognized for achievement in six categories: overall excellence, high progress, reading growth, math growth, extended (5-year) graduation rate, and English language acquisition.
 
For the fifth consecutive year, Woodland Elementary School earned the Overall Excellence Award from the state. This means that each year Woodland has been among the top 5 percent of schools based on state assessments in the areas of reading, writing, math, and science.

Both Kalles Junior High and Meeker Elementary are being recognized for closing the achievement gap for students with disabilities. “Closing the achievement gap is a central focus for the district,” said district Superintendent Tim Yeomans. 

Four schools have won the award with special recognition for growth in mathematics achievement. These schools include Ridgecrest, Stewart, Sunrise, and Woodland elementaries.
 
Ridgecrest and Sunrise elementaries are repeat winners being honored for growth in mathematics.

“The Achievement Awards recognize all the great work happening in Washington schools and the ways educators are making a difference in student outcomes,” said Kevin Laverty, State Board of Education Acting Chair. “It presents an opportunity to honor schools that are achieving at high levels, as well as schools that are making great growth.”
 
The award-winning schools will be honored at a ceremony on May 3 at Olympic Middle School in Auburn. A banner and an etched acrylic award will be given to all schools to display in their buildings.
