Samaritan Readers serves in six elementary schools. We pair struggling readers
in kindergarten through the third grade with adult tutors for one-on-one
reading mentoring. The volunteers meet with their student one hour a week,
every week, for the duration of the school year. The mentor role emphasizes that
an adult relationship is crucial for academic success.
Offered at: Firgrove, Karshner, Pope, Stewart, Sunrise, and Woodland elementary schools
Our Good Samaritan Readers Program meets at six elementary schools – Karshner, Pope, Stewart, Sunrise, Woodland, and now at Firgrove between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Times vary at each location. Each program is run by a Site Coordinator and our tutors are volunteers from the community.
We provide an orientation training class to get our volunteers familiar with the curriculum for each grade level they are tutoring.
Become a Tutor:
We look for volunteers every summer for the following school year. Please note that all tutors must undergo a training session to familiarize themselves with the GSR curriculum and tutor responsibilities. Our training sessions are offered periodically at the Puyallup School District’s Educational Services Center, 302 Second Street SE, Puyallup, WA 98372.
In addition to attending a training session, all tutors need to complete an Online Volunteer Application on the Puyallup School District website; here is the link: PSD Volunteer Services. When applying, under “Volunteer Category,” you will want to select COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS. This will ensure we receive your application. At the end of the application you will then select the school(s) you are interested in volunteering at.
*Please note this is a new system, approvals are good for 2 years from the date of notification, unless otherwise indicated, so if you were approved to volunteer last year, you do not need to submit a new application until next year. To confirm your approval expiration date, you may contact your school office or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
If interested, please contact Chris Stockslager for more information.
